God’s Version of Girl Power – Part 1

As a Christian woman and a woman who tries to “keep it real,” I have to say I’m pretty sick and tired of this “girl power” the world tries to sell us. The idea that we don’t need a man and we can do it all on our own. Yeah it sounds good, but is it Biblical? Should a Christian woman be spewing the world’s version of how we should be as women? Let’s look at scripture for the answer.

In Genesis when God created woman he said:

And the Lord God said, it is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.
And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh instead thereof; And adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of man. Therefore shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.  Genesis 2:18, 21-24

Question – Why was a woman created in the beginning?

Answer – So the man would not be alone and to be a helper to him.

Oh boy, wouldn’t the women’s libbers just love if you told them they were created to help a man?

Does this mean that God sees a woman as a second-class citizen? OF COURSE NOT! It means a man has a role and a woman has a role (yes I realize that is another trigger word for our friends in the women’s movement) and if there is an issue with “gender roles,” I suggest you take that up with the Creator.

Now let’s look at help meet a little closer. The Hebrew words for help meet is Ezer Neged. Ezer means a helper, assistant, one who aids. Most of its occurrences in scripture it is used in a divine nature.

Our soul waiteth for the Lord: he is our help (ezer) and shield.  Psalms 33:20
But I am poor and needy: make haste unto me, O God: thou art my help  (ezer) and my deliverer; O Lord, make no tarrying.  Psalms 70:5
I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help (ezer) Psalms 121:1

So with this in mind, a Godly wife is DIVINE AID! God made her specifically to aid the man. And why — its simple — men need help! There are things a woman can do better than a man; things she is built to do.

The writer Doug Wilson wrote in Reforming Marriage, “As a result of the Creation order, men and women are oriented to one another differently. They need one another, but they need one another differently. The man needs the help; the woman needs to help.”
